Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph - December 30, 2018

Dec 28, 2018

My Dear Parish Family,

How often are we confident — even complacent — about knowing where to find Jesus, only to be startled — even frightened — to discover he is not there? Our response is to search frantically for him, but when we find him we are further stunned by where he is and what he has to say to us. How, we ask, are we to go from here in order truly to advance in “wisdom and age and favor”?

Mary and Joseph’s experience of losing Jesus in the temple stretched them to relate to and understand their Son Jesus in a deeper way. Jesus was not the only one who returned to Nazareth and grew in “wisdom and age and favor.” So did Mary. So did Joseph. This openness to God’s new in-breaking was a mark of their holiness.

Our own openness to God’s new in-breaking is a mark of our holiness. God’s action in our lives is never stagnant, but dynamically leads us forward to newer insights, deeper understanding, and greater courage to change. This feast of the Holy Family pushes us to seek ever anew God’s action in our lives and respond with newfound forms of fidelity.

In Christ’s Peace,

Fr. Walter
