My Dear Parish Family,

Hearing the words “I love you” for the first time, hearing an infant say “Mama” or “Dada” for the first time, hearing a stirring musical piece for the first time. How these moments change us! How we miss these moments if we do not stop long enough to really listen! What we hear can change us; but we need to change in order to hear. Are we ready to change?

God’s command to listen to the beloved Son is also a command to change. Listening as an essential dimension of discipleship requires that we encounter Jesus, come to know who he is, and allow ourselves to be changed. Are we ready to be transfigured?

Jesus speaks to us in our encounters and struggles with each other, in the ordinary events of every day, in our quiet times of prayer and reflection. He speaks to us in the tension between religious experiences and the humdrum of daily living, between light and shadow, between clarity and questioning. But we cannot hear what he is saying to us if our lives are so frenetic, noisy, and so distracted that we never encounter Him. Are we ready to change?

In Christ’s Peace,

Fr. Walter
