Holy Week confronts us with the powerful symbol of the cross. No other word or object so definitively and completely symbolizes the love of God for us, His own. No other symbol confronts us with the very worst we fail to see in ourselves, that part of us that enables us to rationalize the crucifixions we execute. By the cross, we are reconciled with God; by the cross our lives are transformed in the perfect love of Christ; by the cross, Jesus’ spirit of humility and compassion become a force of hope and re-creation in our hurting and despairing world.

Jesus enters Jerusalem for the final and climactic chapter of his messiahship, when God will vindicate his son’s teachings on selfless love, His exultation of humble service. We who have been baptized in the death and resurrection of Jesus have been entrusted with his work of redemption, of recreating our Jerusalem’s into cities of peace and the kingdom of God.

In Christ’s Peace,

Fr. Walter
