Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord ~ January 6, 2019

My Dear Parish Family,

Incandescent light bulbs are being replaced by more energy efficient and longer lasting CFL, LED, and halogen light bulbs. These are more expensive, but in the long run, bring many cost-effective benefits. God’s “light” is the most energy efficient, long lasting, benefit-giving Light there is. It is also the most expensive. The price is our very selves.

The Magi ask, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews?” They have committed themselves to follow the light of the star, searching until they find this King. Unfortunately, they ask the wrong person for the light of guidance along the way. Fortunately, they choose to follow God’s light and they find the Treasure for which they have been searching. They offer “gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh,” but much more: they offer the gifts of themselves in humble homage.

How committed are we to finding Christ? What light guides us? Do we persevere in following the light? Do we ask the right persons for guidance and help? Do we listen to them? When we find Christ anew, are we willing to pay the cost of walking in his Light? Are we willing to pay with the gift of our very selves?

In Christ’s Peace,

Fr. Walter
