My Dear Parish Family,

We experience many kinds of self-sacrificing love. There is honest love, where someone finds a briefcase of money and turns it in to the authorities rather than keeping it. There is caring love, where a stranger helps someone who trips and falls. There is tough-love, where parents hold the line in face of a youth’s destructive behavior. There is also compassion-love, healing-love, tender-love, peace-love, just-love. So much love! So much glory!

What Jesus demanded in his time was well beyond the expected behavior of even good people. His new commandment is that we live by Jesus-love. Jesus-love demands a total giving of self. Jesus-love is the only love that brings God glory.

What raises our love quotient? To love as Jesus loves us means we must put self and self-interest aside: we must open our eyes to see the needs of others, empathize with the plight of others, act to correct injustices, defend another who is wronged, reach out to the disabled. So many opportunities to love! So much love! So much glory!

In Christ’s Peace,

Fr. Walter
