Several actions surround the sharing of communion. We begin with the Lord’s Prayer, a prayer we know by heart, the prayer that sums up the basics of our life: praising God’s holiness, praying for God’s reign, asking for daily bread. We exchange a greeting of peace, a sign that God’s reign is among us, shared with friend and stranger alike. We sing the Lamb of God as Christ’s body is broken and his blood poured out, and move to the table to commune with Christ and each other. In this tiny meal, a fragment of bread and a sip of wine, our deepest hunger and thirst are satisfied. We say Amen and by that Amen, promise to live as the body and blood of Christ, in our homes, schools, workplaces, neighborhoods — in our world.

In Christ’s Peace,
